Today we hit the road and visited the North Carolina Maritime Museum (visit the website here) in Beaufort, which is a good 45 miles from Jacksonville. I might eat every canned item in the pantry in the name of economy, but I'll burn gasoline to get to a museum. When we got there, the nice gentleman told me there was no flash photography permitted (hence the questionable quality of all the images), but there was still some neat stuff in there.
The first thing I noticed was a giant fossilized lobster.
Then I found a cross section of a ship's cannon.
There was a whole section on Blackbeard and his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.
Then I found a boat (imagine that in a maritime museum) and an illustration of a primitive water rescue device, which looks an awful lot like a pair of Fruit of the Looms attached to a lifesaver.
There was also a supersweet fresnel lens (the lens in a lighthouse) that was actually rotating and throwing neat patterns and rainbows all over the room.
After that I visited the fish room. I don't think it was called the fish room, but damn did it have a lot of fish stuff in it.
After we left the museum, I managed to take exactly one picture of boats/water that didn't completely disappoint me. Enjoy it here with me:
That's Day 2.
